West Detention Release Routes

West Detention Center is one of two active PBSO detention centers. It serves the Glades from Belle Glade and holds minimum, medium, and maximum custody levels. PBSO also describes the jail as program-oriented and says it offers re-entry services for people making the transition to the community. Program participation is not itself a release. The official custody event still controls.

PBSO says a bonded person may be released from West itself. Family or friends may wait for the person or receive a telephone call after processing. Other departures have a different legal effect. A movement from West to Main leaves the person in Palm Beach County custody. A transport to South Bay, Sago Palm, or another Florida Department of Corrections institution begins or continues state custody. A transfer to a federal agency also remains custody.

Verify West Detention Release

The PBSO Booking Blotter is the county's public booking search. Its date fields select booking dates. They do not produce a list of people released on those dates. Search the known person by name and a narrow booking range within the portal's rolling prior-year scope. If the person no longer appears as held, do not assume that the jail released them into the community.

A sound check follows the last documented event and uses the agency that owned it.

1. Match the PBSO booking by name and booking date. Save the identifier and facility information that belong to that event.
2. Call centralized Inmate Records at 561-688-4340 for a recent status change, bond processing question, or unclear transfer.
3. Open Palm Beach Clerk eCaseView to review the bond, release order, disposition, sentence, commitment, or warrant.
4. If the person entered FDC, search Inmate Population for the current institution and Current Release Date. Later, use Inmate Release for the actual state exit.
5. Request the county release and transfer records if the public result does not identify the time, authority, method, or next custodian.

West Detention Record Contacts

The official West Detention Center page lists the facility at 38811 James Wheeler Way, Belle Glade, Florida 33430, with a main number of 561-712-2971. The centralized Inmate Records number, 561-688-4340, serves both operating county jails and is the better route for immediate custody or release confirmation. The facility main line and records line perform different functions.

Copies come through PBSO Central Records rather than the facility's general phone. The public-records request page provides GovQA, phone, mail, and in-person channels. GovQA lets a requester track the request, pay charges, and receive records. In-person service is at 2195 Southern Boulevard, West Palm Beach, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Central Records may be called at 561-688-3140. Mail goes to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Attn: Central Records, 3228 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33406.

State the booked name, approximate booking date, booking number if known, West Detention Center, and the fields sought. Useful fields include release date and time, release type or authority, hold, transfer destination, and booking identifiers. If no single form contains them all, ask for the release screen, court order, transfer entry, and event log. A narrow request makes review easier.

West Detention Facility Facts

PBSO's current page states that West has 998 beds and holds all custody levels. A 2023 accreditation audit used a rated-capacity figure of 988. The figures come from different dated sources, so neither should be silently substituted for the other. Capacity does not state current population or how many people leave on any day.

The official local history says West was built in 1983. PBSO reports that a $72 million expansion and renovation was completed on April 9, 2011. This history can explain why an old address description, drawing, or capacity reference differs from the current page. It cannot establish a release time or status.

West Detention Release Copies

Florida's public-records law permits inspection and copying at reasonable times, subject to exemptions. A requester need not state why the record is wanted or submit a written form. Writing is still practical. It fixes the event window and prevents a booking-date search from being mistaken for a release-time search.

Florida's GS2 schedule treats several records separately. Item 22 Commitment and Release Lists describes people booked or released during a 24-hour period and can include a booking number, name, charge, bond, release method, and release date. Item 16 Booking Records can contain the court order, scheduled release date, and booking details. Item 53 Inmate Incarceration Records may contain commitment papers, transfer orders, verification letters, and returned-property receipts. Each has a one-anniversary-year minimum after release. PBSO may keep a record longer, while the permanent jail docket preserves a basic institutional series.

Release authority

The court, sentence event, bond process, or agency action that permits the exit.

Transfer

A custody move in which another jail, prison, or agency takes control.

Discharge

An end to the custody term shown by the responsible custodian, which may still be followed by supervision.

For a group of recent West releases, request the Item 22 list selected by release timestamp. For one person, ask for the booking and release record plus the related court or transfer document. These scopes reduce the risk of receiving only a booking search printout.

After West Detention Transfer

A person committed to FDC should be checked in the statewide Corrections Offender Network, not the PBSO release search alone. FDC separates current Inmate Population, Inmate Release, and Supervised Population databases. While the person is imprisoned, the population record gives current facility and the field FDC calls Current Release Date. That date can change. After the actual state exit, the release record supplies Release Date and Date Out-Custody details. A supervision result can show that confinement ended while a state term in the community continues.

FDC does not cover a county-jail-only sentence or county probation. Its system is for felony offenders sentenced to state prison or state supervision. There can also be a delay while physical transport, intake, and data entry occur. During that gap, the Palm Beach court commitment and PBSO transfer record explain why the person is gone from West.

If West transferred the person only to Main Detention Center, stay with PBSO. Both buildings are parts of the same county corrections system. The booking's facility label may show where an event occurred, but it is not a final statement about release. Inmate Records can resolve the current county location, while the record request provides a durable copy of the movement and release trail.

Note: West's re-entry programs support transition, but enrollment does not by itself change a person's legal custody status.
